At MyDental Rossmoyne, we’re proud to offer our patients services that go beyond general dentistry and into more specialized fields that patients often require.
Endodontic treatment involves the root and deep tissues of the teeth, and often refers to something called a ‘root canal’.
What is a Root Canal?
When a tooth becomes badly decayed, a root canal may be the best treatment to undergo. A root canal is designed to repair or save a tooth after infection occurs. During a treatment, your dentist or endodontist will remove the pulp and nerve of the tooth in question, cleaning the area and sealing it. This will stop the decay in its tracks, with the ultimate goal of saving your natural tooth.
If you need a root canal and don’t get one, the tooth will die and can affect the integrity of nearby teeth as well, causing problems like infections and even abscesses. This can result in a very costly care plan, which is why it’s always better to visit us at the first sign of an issue.
We’re happy to let you know that we have an extremely high success rate in endodontic cases, and patients leave feeling confident and happy with the work we provide. We’ll always take every possible measure to save your natural tooth instead of recommending an implant, though sometimes that may be necessary.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a root canal take?
A root canal typically consists of a few appointments before care is complete—usually three. During the first visit, we’ll examine your mouth to ensure this is the proper treatment for you and take any x-rays required. We can also discuss the financials at this time to ensure no surprises—we aim for open, honest care. Your next two appointments will involve cleaning out your tooth and sealing it, as well as a follow-up visit to make sure everything was completed perfectly.
Is a root canal painful?
During endodontic treatment, anaesthetic will be used to ensure you remain comfortable for the entire duration. You will not be able to feel any work being done to your teeth. If you’re a nervous or anxious patient who prefers sleep dentistry, we’re happy to offer that as a service to you through IV sedation. If cost is a concern, we recommend getting a prescription from your GP for a relaxing medication to take prior to your visit with us. During your first appointment, we can recommend something that may help and is safe.
What is the cost of a root canal?
Because each case is unique, it’s difficult to project a final cost until we’re able to see your specific needs in person. Whether or not one or multiple teeth are affected will play a role in the final cost. We of course strive to keep our care affordable for all patients, and will do our best to work with you when it comes to a payment plan.
