If you’re missing teeth, or are experiencing a situation in which your tooth needs to be removed due to infection, abscess or root problems, we’re here for you.
At MyDental Rossmoyne, our team of dental professionals has years of experience helping patients achieve the smile of their dreams through our custom and focused dental implant procedure.
What Are Dental Implants?
A dental implant is essentially a prosthetic “new tooth” that can be placed in your mouth where you’re missing teeth. Dental implants are often made of high-quality ceramic, as it provides a natural look, feel and function.
The dental implant process involves at least three visits to our practice, and can often be a lengthy process. This is because we may need time to complete a bone graft to ensure your jaw has the strength to secure an implant. During this process, it will take time for your natural bone to grow around the implant post. The implant post is what will secure hold your implant in place just like a natural tooth.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who is a candidate for an implant?
Anyone who may be missing one or multiple teeth is typically a candidate for a dental implant. The other requirement is healthy gums and enough bone to properly secure an implant into your jaw. When you visit us for an appointment, we’ll perform an oral exam to let you know whether or not you’re a good candidate. If we think a different treatment will offer better results, we’ll surely let you know. It’s also ideal if the patient considering an implant is a non-smoker to help ensure teeth and gum health, as well as overall health.
How long can a dental implant last?
With proper care, a dental implant can last upwards of 15 years. Proper care includes continuing to brush and floss your implant just as you do for your natural teeth. It’s important to treat your implant with care. Though your implant will be as strong as your natural teeth, we recommend not biting or tearing anything open with your mouth. You should also avoid chewing hard candies or food with your implant.
Is there any downtime associated with dental implants?
Because receiving a dental implant(s) is considered a surgery, there is some downtime associated with the procedure. We recommend that patients do not return to work the same day that their implant is placed. We’ll also use a local anaesthetic, so you may be numb for several hours after your appointment. If you opt to undergo twilight sedation, you’ll want to bring a family member or friend who can drive you back from your visit with us. We also recommend that you don’t fly following your implant procedure for at least one week to make sure everything is fitting well and not causing issues.
