Periodontics involve treating and correcting problems related to your gums—like gingivitis, advanced gum disease, and even gum recession. At our practice, we’re happy to offer select periodontal services, including deep cleanings for those who may be experiencing early stage gingivitis.
What is a Deep Cleaning?
A deep cleaning, also known as root planing, is similar to a regular oral hygiene appointment, however we take extra measures to remove the excess plaque and tartar buildup under and around your gum line. During an appointment, we’ll actually pull your gums back slightly to clean beneath the surface.
Why? Because in a patient who is experiencing gum recession or early stage gingivitis, it’s important to remove bacteria and plaque causing the issue. If caught early enough and cleaned properly, the progression of gum disease can be halted in its tracks—of course, this still requires the patient to practice proper oral health habits daily.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a root planing appointment take?
A root planing appointment is similar in length to a regular oral hygiene appointment—think of it as an oral hygiene appointment but fully dedicated to your gums. Expect to spend about an hour with us. After, you’re free to return to your regular activities or work.
Will a deep clean hurt?
A deep clean is entirely comfortable. If we believe it will make you more relaxed, we can use a general anaesthtic so you won’t feel a thing.
How do I know if I need to schedule a deep clean?
During a regular oral hygiene appointment, we’ll notify you if we think you’d benefit from a deep clean. If you’ve noticed any gum recession, pink or bleeding gums, you may be an ideal candidate to help stop the effects of gingivitis from progressing.
How often should I have a root planing appointment?
This depends on your overall oral health. If you have a deep cleaning appointment and continue to maintain proper oral health standards, i.e., brushing and flossing daily, you shouldn’t need another deep clean for quite some time. However, we’ll be sure to let you know at your six-month checkups!
Will a root planing appointment help my gums return to normal?
A deep clean or root planing appointment can help your gums get healthier, but it will likely not cause them to return to their normal length. If you feel like your gums are too short, or if we believe it’s a problem and is exposing too much of the root of your teeth, we’ll refer you to a specialist to discuss your options for minimally invasive gum surgery.
