When tooth becomes broke, chipped, discouloured or has lost its integrity in one way or another, a dental crown or bridge can sometimes be the best solution. At MyDental Rossmoyne, we’re proud to let you know that our team of experienced dental professionals have years of experience helping patients just like yourself understand the entire process surrounding crowns, and helping to craft the perfect new tooth or teeth for you.
What are Crowns?
A crown acts as a ‘cover’ for your natural tooth, and fits snugly around it. Crowns are typically made of ceramic because it’s long lasting and acts similar to your natural tooth. A crown is an ideal way to correct a chipped or damaged tooth without removing the natural tooth itself. The process for a crown typically involves three visits to our practice—we’ll begin by discussing the best options for you and answering any questions you may have.
Next, we’ll complete scans and x-rays to help us get the best look at your mouth and bite. We’ll also take impressions to help us mould a crown that will look and function just as your natural tooth—though improved aesthetically. Your crown will be custom built by a lab with extensive experience, and then you’ll return to our practice for a fitting. During your last visit, we’ll place the crown and cement it in place.
What is a Dental Bridge?
A dental bridge is often suitable for patients who may be missing one or multiple teeth. A bridge involves the placement of crowns on either side of your missing tooth to help support the false tooth in the middle.
A dental bridge is also typically made of ceramic, as it’s an ideal building material and long-lasting, allowing you to chew and speak naturally just as you would without it.
Similar to a crown appointment, a dental bridge usually takes several visit to finalise. If you’re a nervous or anxious patient, we’re happy to welcome you to our practice and will do our best to explain the process in great detail to calm any nerves. You can also opt to undergo sedation dentistry, which allows you to experience a ‘twilight sleep’ during your visits.
During both a crown or dental bridge treatment, it’s important to remember that neither require surgery, making them ideal options for patients who aren’t quite ready for full dental implants.
With proper care, dental crowns and bridges can last 15 years or longer. It’s important to maintain proper oral health habits like daily brushing and flossing regularly. You should always care for your crown or bridge just as you would your natural teeth.
